Superworms, as they are commonly known, are actually the larval stage of the darkling beetle (Zophobas Morio). Not to be confused with mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), superworms in comparison attain gargantuan proportions : Adult length :
50-60mm (450-700mg) Superworms are recognised by petkeepers/breeders around the world as a premium live food for birds, reptiles, primates and fish. As opposed to mealworms who live on bran, the superworm diet is extremely high in protein rich foods and vitamins which translates to a much higher quality feeder for your pets. Live food offers a natural and easily digestible source of nutrients, vitamins and trace elements the way nature intended. Live food is also known to stimulate and encourage the breeding cycle in a variety of animals and is the perfect solution when confronted with difficult feeders and/or those struggling to adjust to unnatural food & living conditions. Unlike mealworms, superworms do NOT morph into beetles without the application of specific conditions. This means you can keep your superworms alive and well for several months (as adults) without loss. Superworms are not new to the South African market, yet up until now they have not been available in sufficient quantities to satisfy demand. This has translated to erratic supply & ultimately superworms have been considered more a luxury food item than anything else. Now this is no longer the case. We have the largest stock of superworms in South Africa; always available, direct to your door within 24 to 72 hours, dependant on your location. We have fine-tuned our feeding plan based on the natural biology of the superworm and this is coupled with a solid understanding of the importance of a live enzyme based diet for optimum nutrition. We feed our superworms a specially formulated, top quality, totally balanced, highly nutritional diet to ensure they leave our breeding centre in the highest quality condition. We do not rely on low value feeds such as bran to nourish our worms. Purchasing worms direct from us is a breeze. We dispatch the very next day after receipt of payment & order details - delivery to your door by our very reputable courier network - live arrival guaranteed (except in the case of Acts of God, such as below freezing weather conditions or heat waves, over which we have absolutely no control). Payment is accepted via bank transfer (EFT) or cash deposit and our website is fully automated to accept orders via internet on www.herpetology.co.za. No internet? Just phone or fax your order through to us & we do the rest. Superworms are easy to maintain and can be kept in just about any plastic container; 20-50 litres is ideal. When keeping large numbers together, place them in a little bran and stack egg boxes to increase usable surface area. Clean containers regularly of worm excrement and old food as the decomposition process generates ammonia which is toxic to the worms and they will quickly die. Superworms are scavengers by nature and will eat just about anything. Use fruit and veg, raw meat, and dog pellets as a food source whilst they are in your care. Bear in mind though, what you feed to the superworms is what will pass on to your pet/s. |
